We’ve all heard of TikTok now and how couldn’t we. But, a corner of the social media platform, BookTok has been heavily influencing new readers and current book worms to pick up titles and send book sales skyrocketing. With book lovers from all over the world chatting about their favourite books, the ones that made them sob or frankly, ones that are just not quite worth the hype, it’s easy to get influenced and be encouraged to buy (or not buy) from watching the short clips.
Here are some of the most popular books spoken about on the platform.
Originally published in 2011, Songs of Achilles by Madeline Miller has risen to the best sellers list of New York Times, selling over 10,000 copies a week after it had taken over BookTok, thanks to the emotional videos created. Madeline Miller reimagines Homer’s Iliad from the perspective of Achilles’ best friend Patroclus.
Another book that got consistently popular from the heart-breaking narrative and the power to bring anyone to tears, They Both Die In The End tells the story of Mateo and Rufus. They are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on the day that they’re both destined to die.
A young adult series that has been popular ever since it was first released in 2018. However, The Cruel Prince has been circulating on BookTok consistently due to its enemies-to-lovers storyline. The story follows the journey of Jude, a mortal girl and Cardan, a faerie prince as they navigate the world of hate, betrayal, contempt along with feelings for each other
An adult fantasy romance that has not only taken over Tiktok, but every other social media platform apparently and I understand why. Thrilling, magical and action-packed and of course, plenty of romance, we follow Poppy, a maiden who has had limited contact with the world, who will ascend soon and Hawke has been appointed as her personal guard.
A regular on BookTok for causing emotional distress, this is heavily featured on the ‘books that will make you cry list’. At a hefty 700+ pages, just be prepared. It’s an epic story about love and friendship in the 21st century. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
On a lighter note, The Deal is the first in the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy. An athlete makes a deal with a tutor so he can keep up his grades to carry on playing hockey. Bad boy/good girl, enemies to friends to lovers, it has all the tropes you’d want.
You can hardly scroll through your fyp without ACOTAR popping up at some point. The first in the fantasy romance series by Sarah J.Maas, it’s a rollercoaster ride that follows the journey of Feyre after she is dragged to a magical kingdom for killing a faerie. Just be ready for this one.
A Hades and Persephone modern day retelling that’s been creeping onto TikTok more and more for its romance and steam. If you enjoy a touch of Greek Mythology and haven’t got around to this one yet, then you should.
Continuing the Greek Mythology themes, Circe sure is a special one. It’s become increasingly popular on BookTok recently thanks to the beautiful story telling and captivating writing. It is simply wonderful, and we totally understand why Madeline Miller has gained a new and enthusiastic fanbase on the app.
A young adult mystery novel that came out in 2014 is another book that went back on the bestseller list thanks to a viral TikTok. A group of friends, a private island and a bunch of liars, would could possibly go wrong?
